Cinema 4D Sketch & Toon
Posted by: peddamat In: Articles|Comp. Graphics|In Progress|Software
Here are a few sketches I created while working on my next article. The videos are mostly droplet simulations, rendered using the Cinema 4D Sketch & Toon module. The background is from bittbox, and the damn catchy tunes are from the Ting Tings, Les Hommes, and the Papa Fritas, respectively. The trailing video is a test of the C4D formula modifier. All the videos were composited in After Effects.

Almost all major 3D packages include particles and dynamics simulation. Some, like the Nucleus module in Autodesk Maya 2009, are incredibly sophisticated. Using these packages to visually learn physics and mathematics is more fun then you’d think.
Check out the following tutorial for Houdini’s Flame Front simulator: click.
In an almost amusing, unintentional way, this tutorial provides graphic artists with a great introduction to the concept of divergence. By attempting to model and simulate reality, one is exposed to the immense beauty of mathematics.
My package of choice is Cinema 4D, by Maxon; and as a trusty backup, Blender. Both of these tools include simulation capabilities, and are many orders of magnitude easier to use than Maya. Blender also has lots of free documentation, which I recommend checking out. Here’s a link to the Physical Simulation wiki.
For some inspiration, check out Ron Fedkiw’s page, here.
As I continue to play with these packages, I’ll update this article with neat scene files, links to resources, and additional info.

Older Stuff
I made these clips while learning how to use the Mograph module in Cinema 4D R10 a few years ago. Music by Foday Musa Suso – The Ripple Effect. Vimeo is a bit buggy, so if the clips play too quickly, pause and hit play again.
